Jenica's story
In 2023 I moved from the United States to Estoril, Portugal. Alone, with no contacts on the ground and no safety net. Portugal was not a random choice. I researched it, I planned it, and I made the move solo. I handled my own residency application from start to finish, which is how I ended up learning the immigration system. I also navigated the NIF process and AIMA residency appointments on my own, so I understand how confusing these steps can feel for newcomers.
I chose the coast rather than central Lisbon, and three years of daily life in Estoril and Cascais have taught me exactly what that trade costs and what it gives back. The lifestyle, the rent, the commute, the ocean five minutes away, and all the small everyday practicalities that nobody writes about. If you are weighing the coast against the city, that is a conversation I can have honestly, because I have been living the answer.
The hardest parts of the move were the ones nobody warns you about. The emotional weight of doing it alone. Homesickness. The slower pace of life, which sounds wonderful until it is your appointment that gets pushed. Building a routine that feels like an actual life in a country that is not home yet.
I also learned that community does not simply happen to you when you move abroad. You have to be deliberate about it. I built my circle here from zero, and out of that I worked out a four phase approach I can walk you through, whichever country you are starting fresh in.
I built my consulting work from here too, so I know what it actually takes to earn a living remotely from Portugal. Registering as a freelancer, opening a bank account when you are brand new and have no history here, and the everyday reality of running your money across two countries. I am not an accountant, and I will not give you tax advice, but I have lived it, and I can tell you what nobody warned me about and which questions to bring to a professional.
I am also active in Lisbon’s tech and startup community, so if you are coming here to work or build something, I can point you toward the coworking hubs, the networking events, and the people actually worth knowing.
And as a Black American woman, I found a peace and a sense of belonging here that I had not expected, along with a culture where African influence is woven into everyday Portuguese life. That has been a real part of my experience, and I am always glad to talk about it honestly with anyone who wants to.
Three years on, Estoril is home. My mornings start with fresh Atlantic air, a coffee, and a life I chose.
