Five suitcases, one dog, and a clear vision for a different life.
moved to Puerto Vallarta from Portland, Oregon seven years ago, as a single woman with five suitcases and my dog. I wasn’t retired, I wasn’t following family, and I certainly didn’t have everything figured out. What I had was a clear vision for a different kind of life and the willingness to bet on myself.
Before the move, I spent 20+ years building a career that started in real estate and grew across marketing, business development, sales, operations, and community development. I hold an MBA and have worked with everyone from small local businesses to international companies. Building community has always been my thread , I helped a Chamber of Commerce grow its membership and create programs connecting local businesses and leaders, and I built online spaces that brought neighbors together. As an entrepreneur, I owned a design and marketing company, then founded and ran a thriving English-language bookstore and café right here in Puerto Vallarta, guiding it through COVID and growing it into a real community hub before selling it five years on. It’s still open today.
Building a life and a business in Mexico meant learning a new language, currency, culture, tax structure, labor laws, and healthcare and banking systems , much of it the hard way. I also know the emotional side: I left three children and five grandchildren back in the US, so I understand both the excitement and the homesickness that come with this kind of move.
People usually come to me about housing, healthcare, cost of living, safety, getting around, and what daily life is really like , plus how to meet people and actually feel like you belong. If you’re thinking about starting or buying a business here, that’s my wheelhouse too.
When I made my move, I wished I’d had someone who had already walked the path. Now I get to be that person for you.
